OpenAI is asking its users to update their Mac software to the latest versions as of today due to "excessive caution." This is due to a security issue related to Axios, a third-party developer tool used by OpenAI.
The company emphasizes that it has found no evidence that OpenAI user data has been accessed.
More details from the announcement made on Friday evening:
Recently, in relation to a larger industry incident that has been widely reported, we have detected a security issue related to a third-party developer tool called Axios. Due to excessive caution, we are taking steps to maintain the process that verifies our macOS applications are legitimate OpenAI applications. We have found no evidence that OpenAI user data has been accessed, that our systems or intellectual property have been compromised, or that our software has been altered.
We are updating our security certificates, which will require all macOS users to update their OpenAI applications to the latest versions. This helps prevent the risk of a fake application being distributed that appears to come from OpenAI.
Links for OpenAI's four Mac applications — ChatGPT, Codex, Atlas, and Codex CLI — can be found here. After May 8, older versions of these applications may not work. More details about the situation can be found in the announcement post.
