Google is introducing a redesigned Google Maps icon that replaces the long-used flat color design with a more modern gradient look inspired by Gemini.
The update is rolling out on both Android and iOS, marking the first major visual change to the Maps icon in years.
A More Modern Look for the Google Maps Icon

The redesigned icon retains the familiar map pin shape while introducing several notable changes.
The top ring of the pin is thinner, and the inner circle is larger, giving the icon a cleaner and sleeker silhouette. However, the biggest change occurs in the color application.
Instead of the previous four flat color segments, Google is now using a smooth gradient blend of its signature colors, creating a more modern and vibrant appearance. This gives a cohesive feel with newer app icons and the overall roadmap.
New Icon Aligns Maps with Google’s AI Ecosystem
The new icon reflects Google’s effort to integrate Gemini AI into its products and services.
Over the past year, Maps has gained several AI-powered features, including:
- Conversational navigation that offers more natural, interactive guidance
- AI-generated business summaries that quickly identify places, highlights, and reviews
- Enhanced visual search through Lens, making it easier to identify places and objects using the camera
By adopting the gradient style, this new icon visually signals that Maps is part of the growing AI ecosystem influenced by Gemini.
Availability of NotebookLM’s New Video and Search Features
The new icon is being distributed via a server-side update, so users do not need to do anything special other than keep the app updated.
You can see the redesigned icon after making the following updates:
- Google Maps 26.09.06 or newer on Android
- Google Maps 26.09.5 or newer on iOS
The rollout is happening gradually, so it may take a few days for the updated icon to appear on all devices.
As Google continues to integrate AI more deeply into its applications, the refreshed Maps icon serves as a clear visual indication that the navigation service has become a fundamental part of the company's broader Gemini AI strategy.
