Amazon Announces New 'Prime Video Ultra' Plan

Amazon has announced that it will launch a new streaming plan called 'Prime Video Ultra' next month, which will change the current ad-free plan and offer more features.

Prime Video Ultra will be Amazon's only ad-free streaming option and will cost $4.99 per month

If you are currently paying for ad-free Prime Video streaming, be prepared for a price increase.

Next month, a new 'Prime Video Ultra' tier will be introduced that will replace the current ad-free option.

When Prime Video Ultra launches on April 10 for U.S. subscribers, it will cost $4.99 per month.

This price is in addition to the standard Amazon Prime subscription (which is $14.99 per month or $139 per year). It also represents a significant increase over the current $2.99/month ad-free plan.

In addition to the higher price, Amazon is offering additional features for the Ultra plan:

up to five simultaneous streams (currently three)
up to 100 downloads (currently 25)
and exclusive access to 4K/UHD streaming

The last feature may attract a new wave of users looking to upgrade from the basic Prime Video plan.

What’s the reason for the changes? From Amazon's announcement:

Providing ad-free streaming and premium features requires a significant investment, and this structure offers flexibility for customers regarding how they want to watch while aligning with other major streaming services. Prime members will continue to enjoy basic Prime Video benefits such as HD/HDR and now Dolby Vision without any additional cost with their Prime memberships.

Prime Video Ultra is currently launching only in the U.S., but if successful, we may see similar launches worldwide in the future.

Prime Video Ultra really does seem very expensive. The additional $4.99 fee could be a significant burden for those currently using the ad-free plan.

The features offered by this new plan are really interesting. Especially 4K streaming and more download capacity are important to me. However, the price increase is concerning.
