A big weekend for Apple and racing in America. F1 returns to America on Sunday with the Miami Grand Prix on Apple TV.
Meanwhile, Apple and Porsche collaborated on a design for an anniversary race car that will be on track in California on May 3.
Porsche announced today that it is working with Apple to recreate the look of the iconic Porsche 935 K3 race car, which was sponsored by the company in 1980.
Racing fans will see a familiar livery on two Porsche race cars at the IMSA race at Laguna Seca in California this Sunday:
At the fourth round of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, taking place on May 3 at Laguna Seca, the Porsche factory team will showcase a historic Apple Computer-inspired livery. The special livery is based on the Porsche 935 K3 that raced at major events, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, during the 1980 season. The one-time design of the two Porsche 963s celebrates two significant milestones occurring in 2026: the 75th anniversary of Porsche Motorsport and the 50th anniversary of Apple.
Oliver Schusser, who is responsible for sports at Apple, explains why the company is working with Porsche on the design:
“We have a long-standing relationship with Porsche that dates back to 1980 when a Porsche race car first carried the Apple logo,” said Oliver Schusser, Vice President of Apple Music, Sports, and Beats.
“That moment marked the beginning of a shared passion for innovation and creativity, and that passion continues to define our collaboration today. As Apple celebrates its 50th anniversary, we are proud to collaborate with Porsche again for a design that pays homage to that original 1980 livery.”
It is likely no coincidence that Apple’s new CEO, John Ternus, has experience driving Porsche race cars at Laguna Seca.
