Anthropic has introduced Claude, an integration with Microsoft Word that allows users to directly access Claude's editing features within documents. Edits are shown as tracked changes, comments are managed within the heading, and updates are applied to specific sections as relevant.

This feature is currently in beta and is available to Claude Team and Enterprise plan subscribers.

Claude's Capabilities in Microsoft Word

Claude for Word works directly within the document, not as a separate application. Users can highlight a paragraph and request it to be rewritten, add comments in a section to receive an AI response within the same heading, or start from a template to generate content that fits existing headings, bullet points, and formatting. Text from uploaded sources can also be included in the document during drafting.

The integration scans all files for issues such as incompatible terms, broken cross-references, and numbering that disrupts synchronization in long documents. When an issue is found, Claude marks it and suggests a correction, but does not make automatic changes; the decision is left to the user or team.

Reusable Workflows and Skills

Teams following consistent review or drafting processes can convert these workflows into reusable skills. A skill records the steps, tone, and structure of common tasks like contract review or status update writing. Once recorded, any team member can run the workflow to achieve the same results without having to reset everything.

The same conversation is portable between Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, so there is no need to start from scratch each time when switching between documents. When Claude makes changes, formatting and structure (including headings, numbering, and defined terms) are preserved and not reformatted.

Availability of Claude for Word

Claude for Word is now available in beta for Claude Team and Enterprise plan subscribers. Anthropic has not provided a timeline for broader distribution or a date for inclusion in lower-tier plans. This feature is part of Anthropic's Claude Cowork product and is expanding with greater corporate control as more businesses adopt it for various functions.
