Apple presented a quite successful quarterly report yesterday and while providing guidance for the next quarter, the company strongly implied that a specific new product will not be released anytime soon.
The basic iPad with A18 chip is unlikely to be released later this year, according to Apple CFO's comments
Every quarter, Apple holds a meeting with investors where they take questions regarding earnings and future expectations.
Analysts typically try to ask questions about future products. However, Apple management consistently brushes off such questions and reveals almost nothing about future roadmaps.
However, during yesterday's earnings call, there was a hint regarding a future product that Apple voluntarily provided.
Apple CFO Kevan Parekh shared the following in his opening remarks:
We expect our total company revenue to grow by 14 to 17 percent year-over-year in the June quarter, which reflects the best outlook of constrained supply. Regarding the iPad, we are facing a tough comparison due to the launch of the A16-supported iPad last year.
Apple was expected to release the successor to the A16 iPad earlier this year, but that did not happen.
A new iPad Air was released in March, but the basic iPad has yet to arrive (both were released last March), and reports indicated that it would still be coming soon. Mark Gurman wrote in Bloomberg, "it's still coming this year and the hardware is ready."
However, Parekh's comments imply that the A18 iPad will be released at the earliest in July and likely later, as Apple generally does not release new products later in the summer.
It is always possible for Apple to release the new iPad earlier, and Parekh used the phrase "tough comparison" because the product will come later than last year's A16 model.
What is more likely is that the emphasis on the tough iPad comparison by the Apple CFO means that new iPads will not be released until later this year.
