John Giannandrea’s tenure at Apple officially ends this week. Giannandrea joined Apple in 2018 after eight years at Google, where he began managing the company’s machine learning and AI strategy.
However, in December of last year, Apple announced that Giannandrea would be stepping down from his position and would serve as a consultant to the company before fully departing in the spring of 2026.
Mark Gurman reports in the latest issue of Power On that Giannandrea’s consulting period at Apple will end this week. This timing coincides with Apple’s April 15 stock grant date, indicating that Giannandrea has remained on Apple’s payroll to qualify for his next stock awards. This is a situation referred to in the industry as “rest and vest.”
Gurman reports that Giannandrea’s post-Apple plans include “joining the boards of some companies and consulting in the startup world.”
Apple has significantly changed its AI teams and organization following the introduction of Apple Intelligence. With the announcement of Giannandrea’s departure in December, Apple also revealed that it had hired Amar Subramanya as AI VP, who will report to Craig Federighi. Subramanya spent 16 years at Google and 5 months at Microsoft before joining Apple.
Control of Giannandrea’s Siri team was taken away in March 2025 amid claims that Tim Cook had “lost confidence in the ability to execute on product development.” Currently, Siri is managed internally by Mike Rockwell, and Giannandrea’s other responsibilities have been taken over by Craig Federighi, Eddy Cue, and Sabih Khan.
Apple is preparing to announce major new AI and Siri features as part of iOS 27 at WWDC in just two months. This will mark the first major features since Federighi took office and comes after Apple signed a deal with Google for Gemini models to bolster its new AI capabilities.
