iOS 26.5 has arrived this week with its beta version, bringing new iPhone features, but it seems that a public launch is not too far away. Here is the expected release date for all users.
iOS 26.5 is Expected to Release in May
Apple has a reputation for privacy and can sometimes surprise us with new releases. A recent example is the launch of AirPods Max 2, which happened without any prior rumors.
However, especially in software, Apple tends to follow very consistent patterns for release dates.
For example, Apple will introduce iOS 27 at WWDC this June and send it to all users in September; it is following the same schedule as usual.
Smaller software updates also follow predictable patterns. Therefore, to get a good idea of when iOS 26.5 will be released, we only need to look at past years.
Here are the x.5 release dates from the last few years:
- iOS 18.5: Monday, May 12
- iOS 17.5: Monday, May 13
- iOS 16.5: Thursday, May 18
- iOS 15.5: Monday, May 16
As you can see, Apple targets average May releases for x.5 software updates.
Based on these patterns and the timing of the first beta release, an average May release for iOS 26.5 seems quite likely.
The week of May 11 looks quite possible or it may be pushed to the week of May 18.
In any case, there is just over a month left until the expected public launch of iOS 26.5.
New Features in iOS 26.5 So Far
After a beta release, iOS 26.5 offers several new iPhone features so far.
Apple Maps has gained a new Unified Places feature that suggests places to explore. This feature provides recommendations based on trending locations and your previous searches.
Additionally, it is expected that iOS 26.5 will bring an update that introduces ads to Maps in the US and Canada.
The Messages app is getting end-to-end encryption for RCS messaging. While it is currently available in the beta version and Apple has not officially committed to sending this in the final version of iOS 26.5, it seems quite likely.
iOS 26.5 also appears to be introducing a new in-app subscription option for App Store apps. There are references in Apple's release notes to a “monthly plan with a 12-month commitment.”
Finally, there are EU-specific changes such as the ability for third-party accessories to support Live Activities.
Since only one iOS 26.5 beta version is currently available, this list will likely grow before the public release date arrives.
